Cavitation | This is a phenomenon of phase change into gas phase thereby creating cavity in the liquid due to depressurization. Although it is similar to boiling, in which a gaseous phase results from heating, it is distinguished by whether pressure or heat is used. There are situations in which the vapor is filled in the cavity and dissolved gas of the liquid is discharged and filling up the cavity, which are referred to as vapor cavitation and gaseous cavitation, respectively. In the case of mineral oil, solubility increases with a drop in vapor pressure, thereby easily resulting in gaseous cavitation for lubricant, while vapor cavitation is limited to bearings subjected to intense variable load |

Ester range synthetic oil, metallic soap, or ester range lubrication additives are rather unstable. |
Infrared Absorption Spectrometry | Analytic method utilizing the absorption spectrum of substances as displayed in the IR ray range. The spectrum reflects the chemical structure of the molecule and is used widely in structural analysis of compounds. In addition, it is possible to execute quantitative analysis by using the characteristic absorption strength. It is used widely for analysis of lubricants, grease, and additives. |
